During the pandemic, it is key that we incorporate as many opportunities as possible for kids to connect with others. Writing letters is a great way to do this, especially if the recipient writes back!

Materials:

  • Paper and pen
  • Envelope and stamp

Directions:

  • Think of someone you want to make feel good, a grandparent, a neighbor, a teacher
  • Write them a letter

Why it works:

  • Empathy is an important skill. Writing letters is great practice.
  • Receiving a letter feels good and hopefully the person will write back.

Variations:

  • Think of something you would like to learn more about, like the Grand Canyon. Write and ask for information.
  • Have you kids write to an imaginary figure like Santa Claus. Then you write back pretending to be that character.

Check out this youtube. Hector Elizond reads Somebody Loves You Mr. Hatch. This story is about the power of writing a letter.
